Last Thursday I had the opportunity to do three map making workshops with the grades 4 to 6s at General Gordon School. This was a lively bunch of students who were all very interested in discussing fantasy and map making. They spent 20 minutes creating their own maps in groups, and 10 minutes writing pen pal letters as though they really did live in those creations.
The interesting thing for me that day was to learn that General Gordon School uses my map making technique as a part of their curriculum! I had taught a course at the Vancouver School Board on teaching creative writing through cartography, and a teacher from GG who had seen my course then taught all of his teachers. Now it is a part of their general program!
